Categorial Morphosyntax: Transparency of the Morphology-Syntax-Semantics Interface
نویسنده
چکیده
Encapsulation of morphology and syntax as separate domains of representation and processing causes many problems at the interfaces, such as rebracketing, reordering, and tampering with the representations of the information domains. These recomputations usually arise due to mismatches with the semantic bracketing. We propose a lexicalist framework based on Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) that provides flexible constituency, flexible (morpho)syntactic category consistency, and flexible attachment. These mechanisms provide enough expressive power to formulate semantically transparent specifications without the necessity to confine structureforming to word-level or phrase-level operations. For instance, bound morphemes in the lexicon can have phrasal scope or word scope independent of their attachment characteristics but consistent with their semantics. The controls can be attuned in the lexicon to language particular properties. The result is a transparent interface of inflectional morphology, syntax and semantics. We show the application of the framework to Turkish and English.

Morphosyntactic Generation of Turkish from Predicate-Argument Structure
In Turkish, which is an agglutinative language, it is difficult to divide morphology and syntax, therefore it is reasonable to treat them in the same way. In this paper, we present morphosyntactic generation of Turkish surface forms from a structured meaning representation, predicate-argument structure (PAS). The algorithm uses a categorial framework which integrates inflectional morphology, sy...
متن کاملThe Role of Syntax in Vector Space Models of Compositional Semantics
Modelling the compositional process by which the meaning of an utterance arises from the meaning of its parts is a fundamental task of Natural Language Processing. In this paper we draw upon recent advances in the learning of vector space representations of sentential semantics and the transparent interface between syntax and semantics provided by Combinatory Categorial Grammar to introduce Com...
متن کاملA Categorial Framework for Composition in Multiple Linguistic Domains
We describe a computational framework for a grammar architecture in which different linguistic domains such as morphology, syntax, and semantics are treated not as separate components but compositional domains. Word and phrase formation are modeled as uniform processes contributing to the derivation of the semantic form. The morpheme, as well as the lexeme, has lexical representation in the for...
متن کاملAbout Parallel and Syntactocentric Formalisms: A Perspective from the Encoding of Convergent Grammar into Abstract Categorial Grammar
Recent discussions of grammatical architectures have distinguished two competing approaches to the syntax-semantics interface: syntactocentrism, wherein syntactic structures are mapped or transduced to semantics (and phonology), vs. parallelism, wherein semantics (and phonology) communicates with syntax via a nondirectional (or relational) interface. This contrast arises for instance in dealing...
متن کاملThe Combinatory Morphemic Lexicon
Grammars that expect words from the lexicon may be at odds with the transparent projection of syntactic and semantic scope relations of smaller units. We propose a morphosyntactic framework based on Combinatory Categorial Grammar that provides flexible constituency, flexible category consistency, and lexical projection of morphosyntactic properties and attachment to grammar in order to establis...
